I’m going show you a surprising lesson for growing your freelance business hidden in a $156,679.74 bar tab today. But first, there’s something you need to know…
I’m a big hockey fan.
I played competitively for most of my life, from elementary school through college. Then in rec leagues for about a decade after I graduated.
Hockey is also the only professional sport that I watch on a regular basis. And the NHL playoffs end around this time every year. (Congrats to the Florida Panthers who just won the Stanley Cup on Monday!)
Which Brings Me Back To The More Than $150,000 Bar Tab I Just Mentioned…
And how it reveals a surprising lesson for growing your freelance business.
Back in 2011, the Boston Bruins NHL hockey team won the Stanley Cup. And somehow a picture of the bar tab from their after party got posted online.
It came out to $156,679.74. Which was shocking enough that it started to pick up traction on social media.
And it seems like every few years, this picture pops up in my newsfeed again. Since someone will post it on the anniversary of the Bruins’ 2011 victory. So I have probably seen this picture dozens of times by now.
Yet Something Surprising Jumped Out At Me When I Saw It Again A Few Days Ago
See, most people focus on the large total at the bottom of the bill. But buried a few lines up, you’ll find a powerful lesson that can help you grow your freelance business. Because that’s where you’ll see the line item for a single bottle of champagne…
That costs $100,000.
Which means this one bottle accounts for 64% of the entire bill — including the tip. Think about what that means…
The waitstaff for this party spent hours serving hundreds of bottles of alcohol and other drinks.
The bill showed 136 bottles of Bud Light alone. (And a single kamikaze shot…which should have gotten that person ejected from the party immediately.)
Yet at the end of the night, the venue and the staff made the vast majority of their money from bringing one single bottle out to the table.
Now to be fair, it was a giant bottle. It weighs around 100 pounds. So I’m sure it took a little more time and effort than serving a typical bottle of champagne, beer, or liquor.
But I bet it was still much faster and easier than shuttling hundreds of drinks back and forth for hours.
