Discover the five people and groups that have had the biggest influence on my freelance career. They can provide powerful guidance for achieving even your most ambitious goals — just like they have for me.
Last week, I mentioned that the biggest lesson I took away from The Copywriter Club In Real Life (TCC IRL) event was…
There’s not one “right” way to run your freelance business.
(If you missed it, I also wrote about it on Facebook. So you can catch up on the details there.)
Instead, you should be studying at least a few trusted sources. Then adapting their methods to build a one-of-a-kind business specific to your strengths and interests.
So Today, I Thought I Would Share A Few Of The Biggest Influences On My Own Freelance Career
Here they are, in no particular order…
Ramit Sethi
Ramit is the reason I’m a freelancer today. I got started by investing in his now-discontinued course Earn1K — which is short for “Earn Your First $1,000 On The Side.” (I share the whole backstory about how I found Ramit starting at 00:01:26 of my podcast episode with The Copywriter Club.)
Ramit’s new course Earnable builds on the principles he taught me in Earn1K, though. So I would encourage you to check it out the next time it’s open for enrollment. (That’s not an affiliate link, either.)
Jay Abraham
Jay is arguably the greatest marketer in the world. He’s a consultant and “masterful thinking partner” for some of the biggest companies in the world.
His work has generated over $21 Billion. And you can learn a ton about partnerships, creative deal structures, and leverage from him. (In fact, I used one of his techniques to land a $163,360 client.)
Also, one of the biggest principles Jay teaches is avoiding “tunnel vision” — where you only follow what is happening in your specific field. And instead, you use “funnel vision” — where you look for insights and inspiration in a wide range of sources. Then you “funnel” those insights down and adapt them for your specific business.
Which brings me to the next person on my list…
Jonathan Stark
Even though Jonathan Stark’s expertise is mostly in the software and high-tech industry, I’ve been able to learn a ton about pricing and operating a service business from him. And I would strongly encourage the copywriters and marketers reading this (which is most of you) to expand your perspective and check him out.
The Copywriter Club
Now even though I said it’s important to avoid “tunnel vision,” you do need to stay on the cutting edge of your chosen field. And for me, that’s copywriting. Which is why I rely on Rob and Kira at The Copywriter Club. They offer a big-picture view on the state of our industry. And their podcast and Facebook group span a massive spectrum of the copywriting field — from brand marketing, to UX/UI, to social media, and more.
Copy Accelerator
Within the copywriting field, my focus is on direct marketing. That’s why I joined the Copy Accelerator Mastermind with Justin Goff and Stefan Georgi back in 2020. For someone at my level, I found they had the best combination of advanced training and access to high-level clients. (And I think I made a good decision. Since after joining Copy Accelerator, my annual income went from $120,000 to $211,000 in two years.)
They also share a lot of excellent guidance on their respective email lists. So especially if you’re in direct marketing, I would suggest signing up at the links above.
