There is a toxic mindset that many freelancers have in common. And it prevents them from getting clients and growing their business. So in this article, I will expose this toxic mindset and show you how to avoid it to enjoy greater success.
I’m not sure what happened. But in the last few weeks, my Facebook profile has received a flood of new followers.
Many of them are aspiring freelancers. And a majority of them also seem to share a toxic mindset that will prevent them from getting clients.
Before I tell you what it is, let me see if you can guess.
The following messages are all taken from my conversation with one of the aspiring freelancers who messaged me recently:
“So can I know what kind business you are running?”
“Can I see your website ?”
“Share the url”
“I can also share my projects with you”
Do you see the problem?
This person is basically asking me to do his job for him.
It’s not like the information he’s requesting is hard to find.
In fact, I told him that I can think of at least 2 ways he could find my website and the kind of business I run in 10 seconds or less.
I didn’t give him the answers. I challenged him to figure it out.
But between you and me, he could either click the link to my Facebook profile in our chat thread. Or he could type “Brian Speronello website” into Google.
Both of those things would pull up my website in approximately 10 seconds.
The Toxic Mindset Behind This Behavior
The toxic mindset here is that this person is expecting to be given opportunities. But if you want to have success as a freelancer, you have to create opportunities.
In other words, you have to be proactive instead of reactive.
You have to take the initiative and figure out the challenges your prospects face or the opportunities they are missing. From there, you have to prove that you can help your prospects resolve their challenges or capture these new opportunities. Then you have to make it easy for them to say “yes” to an initial project with you.
Now I want you to read that paragraph again and notice something:
The only thing the client has to do in the breakdown above is say “yes.”
Everything else is on you.
