There is a common outreach “trick” that many freelancers are using to try and get clients. But instead of helping, it is actually hurting their ability to get hired. Keep reading to find out what this “trick” is — and how to avoid it for yourself.
I want to share a cautionary tale with you today.
Take a look at this email I got recently…
Note that the subject line is: Re: Quick Question.
And the first line is: Hey Brian, I didn’t hear back from you the other day.
Well, do you know why this person “never heard back” from me?
This is the first time they ever sent me an email.
Which means they were trying to trick me into believing that we had already talked previously.
I guess because they think that would make me more likely to reply?
And the worst part is, I know plenty of freelancers also use outreach tricks like this to try and get clients.
But it totally backfired. And now I will never trust this person again.
I even told them that to their face in my response.
Now considering this person was actively lying to me and trying to trick me, I’d say my reply was firm — but fair.
And I’m pretty sure if you ask anyone who has ever sent me a genuine DM or email, they will tell you that my response couldn’t have been nicer or more supportive.
So don’t let this story ever stop you from reaching out to me with an honest and truthful message.
But Let This Also Be A Lesson For You…
It is never a good idea to try and trick your potential clients into replying to you.
If you’re going to reach out to someone, give them a legitimate reason to read your message and respond.
Because you don’t get a second chance to create a first impression.
Make sure it’s a good one.
