A few weeks ago, I was chatting with a high-profile business owner at the Copy Accelerator event in Tampa. He told me there’s one thing freelancers do that he hates more than anything else…
And he’s not alone.
I’ve heard the same thing from plenty of other business owners. (Including many of my own clients.)
They All Hate When Freelancers Don’t Get Back To Them
Especially since they’ve often paid these same freelancers a lot of money for their services.
And to be clear, I’m not talking about clients who have unreasonable expectations about your availability…
Where they demand a response within 15 minutes — any time, day or night.
That is also unacceptable. But it’s not what we’re talking about here…
In this case, these clients have hired freelancers and often paid them $10,000 or more.
But after that, these freelancers disappear.
And when the client emails them to ask about their progress, they don’t respond for weeks…
If they ever respond at all.
That Means These Freelancers Are Making Not One But Two Fatal Mistakes
First, Ideally Your Clients Should Never Have To Check In With You At All
Instead, you should be proactive about reaching out to your clients with an update on your progress.
Because that relieves a ton of your clients’ stress, while giving them peace of mind that your project is on track.
And if you can deliver that relief to your clients, they will almost certainly hire you again for that reason alone.
On top of that, giving your clients updates about your progress also makes them less likely to micromanage you.
Since they know everything is going according to plan.
And that means they will give you the freedom to do your best work — without looking over your shoulder every two minutes.
But even when you’re proactive about touching base with your clients, sometimes they will still ask for an update. Or they will send you a message about a different topic.
And That’s When Many Freelancers Make The Second Fatal Mistake…
They don’t respond to their clients (or anyone who contacts them) right away.
As a professional, you cannot ignore your clients.
And ideally, you should get back to anyone who sends you a legitimate message within a day or two.
Now I know that can seem like a challenge. Especially when you get busy and have to juggle dozens of different message threads, assignments, and project management systems.
Which Is Why I Want To Share A Simple — But Uncommon — Messaging Trick With You Right Now
It only takes a few seconds.
But it will let you respond to your clients — and anyone else who sends you a message — literally 100% of the time.
No matter how busy you are.
All you have to do is send a two-sentence email that notifies the sender you received their message. Then let them know when they can expect a full reply.
For example, you could say something like this…
“Hey [Name], wanted to send you a quick response to let you know that I got your message. I’ll take a look at it in more detail soon and get back to you [by the end of the week/early next week/etc.].”
It shouldn’t take more than 30 seconds to write out a two-sentence email like that.
Which means no matter how busy you are, you can use an email like this to answer your clients in a timely manner. (Along with anyone else who sends you a legitimate message.)
And even though you don’t give them a full answer immediately, your clients will love knowing that you’re on top of it.
Just make sure you follow up with your full reply within the timeframe you promise.
Because as long as you do that, your client’s trust will go way up.
And It Will Put You On The Fast Track To Getting A Lot More Work From Them In The Future
So take a second and save this two-sentence email template somewhere handy right now.
That way, you can start using it to answer your messages quickly — even if you’re busy — while also giving yourself time to draft a more detailed reply later.
And you won’t become one of those “hated” freelancers that doesn’t answer their messages.
