A reader named Stephen asked me a great question. And I thought you’d want to know the answer as well.
Here’s what he said:
“I’ve watched your journey over the years and it inspires me to keep going. I’ve often heard you mention it took five years to catch a break and most ppl don’t realize it will take time…
My question is what is that actual tactical advice to getting to a million?
And one more if starting today and nobody knew you , what would you do to get copy clients?”

“You’re correct that I started my freelance business on top of my full time job and did that for 5 years before I was finally ready to freelance full-time.
When it comes to the tactical advice, a big part of it is also time. I’m almost 11 years into my career now. So not giving up and continuing to grow (even if it starts with baby steps) ultimately led to success. The other part is that I did ultimately get to a point where I was making solid money every year and it started adding up faster.
If I was starting over today, I’d still do what I did 11 years ago. Start on jobs boards like Upwork and Craigslist. Get some initial traction and experience. Then use networking and referrals to pivot off the platforms.
And most important, keep my day job so I’m not worrying about money and can have the patience to build my freelance business the right way without cutting corners or building a shaky foundation that collapses on me later.”
