With the looming threat of a recession, I wanted to share what I’m doing to make sure my freelance business is prepared. But it’s probably not what you think…
By now, you’ve probably heard the doom-and gloom stories in the media saying we’re days away from a recession.
Whether it’s Deutsche Bank issuing a letter to investors saying “We will get a major recession”…
Or Goldman Sachs Senior Chairman Lloyd Blankfein saying it’s a “very, very high risk”…
Things are not looking good.
So that’s why I want to share how I’m preparing with you today.
Because With The Looming Threat Of A Recession, Here’s What I’m Doing To Make Sure I’m Protected…
Nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
See, I believe freelancing is basically recession-proof by its very nature.
Here’s why…
When times are good, companies are growing.
That means they need to hire additional help for limited, specialized roles…
Which is a perfect opportunity for freelancers to pick up clients.
At the same time, when times are tough, companies need to cut costs.
So they will often lay off full-time employees and replace them with freelancers.
First, freelancers can work more flexible hours. And that allows the company to save money by only paying for work when it’s necessary. (As opposed to having a full-time employee sitting at their desk and scrolling around Facebook while they wait for something to do.)
On top of that, full-time employees come with tons of extra costs — like payroll taxes, benefits, and medicare. While freelancers have to cover all these expenses themselves.
And even though freelancers should be factoring these costs into their fees, it is often still cheaper for a company to hire a freelancer compared to a full-time employee.
Which Is Why I Think Freelancing Is Recession-Proof…
Or at least recession-resistant.
So even if we do go into a recession, I’m not worried.
And I hope you aren’t either.
