Discover how a plate of Buffalo wings can help you make more money as a freelancer — with less effort and fewer headaches.
Want to make more money as a freelancer?
Then picture a plate of Buffalo wings.
It doesn’t matter if you’re early in your career or a seasoned freelance veteran.
This “Buffalo wings” trick can help you make more money — with less effort and fewer headaches.
In fact, it’s how I’m able to make multiple six figures a year…
Even though I haven’t signed a single new client in over 12 months.
It’s how I helped one of my private coaching students go from having a half-empty schedule to being overbooked … in less than a month.
And it’s also what I suggested to a reader who asked me for help getting off Upwork.
He wrote me a note about how he still feels trapped on Upwork — even though he has been freelancing for 7 years and has a great track record.
Here’s what he said…
“I’ve been a copywriter for 7 years and i make $1k a month…i worked with major brands and have achieved great results for them.
[But] im just on upwork, thats how i started and thats where i stayed sadly, i dont know how to approach other clients.”
Now most freelancing “gurus” would probably use this opportunity to talk shit about Upwork…
They’d use this as an example of how the platform is like a prison. Since it keeps you trapped there fighting for low-paying clients.
But at this point, you know I’m not a fake guru.
Which Is Why My Advice Flies In The Face Of What You’d Likely Hear From Everyone Else
Here’s what I told this reader instead:
“Sounds like you’ve already established yourself on Upwork. Do you think you’re getting the absolute maximum you can out of the platform?
For example, are you among the highest paid freelancers for your type of work and geographic location?
If not, can you look at what the freelancers who are the highest paid for your geographic location are doing and model after them?
There are a lot of freelancers making a solid living and even six figures just from Upwork. So I don’t necessarily think you need to be leaving the platform to have success.
I’d start by figuring out how to get more money and better clients from Upwork first. Then once you’re closer to hitting the ceiling for the platform, you can think about leaving. Only then, you’ll also have a higher income, better experience, better clients, and a lot of other assets you can use to make it easier to leave the platform.”
After I shared this contrarian advice, the reader wrote me back saying that he never even thought about this before — but it makes total sense.
“Thanks so much Brian, I haven’t thought of that before and I don’t know what other freelancers are doing. i I’ll do some digging, you’re amazing thank you !!”
Now at this point, you may be wondering…
“Hey Brian, this all sounds great … but how does it have anything to do with Buffalo wings?”
Here’s how:
To grow your freelance business, you want to think about scraping every piece of meat off the bone.
I’ve said it before. But too many freelancers are always chasing down the latest new trend or tactic.
And it means instead of making steady, predictable progress…
They wind up going in circles — usually with nothing to show for it.
Which is why I recommend doing the opposite.
Be strategic and choose a select few opportunities you are going to pursue…
Then get absolutely everything you can out of each one.
And only once you’ve done that should you think about expanding further.
Not only does this approach help keep you from chasing shiny objects around in circles. It also means you will have a much stronger foundation when you finally do decide to expand your efforts into new areas.
So remember, if you want to grow your freelance business, picture a plate of Buffalo wings…
Then scrape every last piece of meat off those bones.
