This article reveals the “secret” reason that some freelance clients will pay 25%…50%…even two times more — for the same deliverables. (Hint: it has nothing to do with how much cash they have in the bank.)
This may seem obvious at first…
But one of the best ways to grow your freelance business is by working with higher-paying clients.
Because how amazing is it to have a client pay you 25%…50%…maybe even two times (100%) more…
For the exact same work you’ve always done?
It’s pretty much the freelancing Holy Grail.
But have you ever stopped to wonder why this happens…
And how YOU can find the clients that pay you more for the exact same deliverables?
Well, that’s what I want to talk about today.
Because most freelancers just assume it comes down to the client’s bank account.
And that the clients with more money in the bank are also the same clients that pay more.
But they’re wrong.
Now of course, a client can’t pay you with money they don’t have.
So their budget does matter at some point…
But there’s also a “secret” reason that some clients pay more for the exact same work…
And it has nothing to do with how much cash they have in the bank.
It’s because different clients get different value from your work.
Think about it…
Let’s say you have the skills to add 10% to your client’s sales.
Well, if you work with a $100,000 client, you’ll make them $10,000…
But if you work with a $1,000,000 client, you’ll make them $100,000…
That’s an extra $90,000 for the second client…
Again — for the exact same deliverables!
So in a very real way, the “value” you bring is directly related to the client’s existing scale. And on their ability to generate a ROI from the work you do.
Because let’s say I find a tech company making a BILLION dollars per year as a possible client…
But they’ve never done any direct marketing. (Which is the kind of copy I write.)
That means they have none of the experience, tools, systems, and processes you need to run a successful direct marketing campaign.
So even though they’re making a billion dollars, they almost certainly wouldn’t get a good return on my work. Because they don’t have all the other pieces to execute successfully.
Which is the “secret” reason that bigger companies will often pay much higher rates.
It’s NOT that they have more cash in the bank (although that’s usually also true)…
It’s because the size and scope of their business allows them to make more from your work.
So they’re willing to invest more in return.
And that’s why increasing your access to better clients is one of the best investments you can make in your freelance growth. Whether that’s time you spend networking or money you spend to attend events.
How to get access to higher-value clients is a massive topic all by itself, though.
So I’ll publish another article about that in the future.
