Last Friday, my direct-marketing mastermind (Copy Accelerator) had a local event here in New Jersey. And damn, did it feel good to finally see people in person again. So today, I want to share my number-one takeaway from the event.
Especially since there was some serious brain-power in that room.
In fact, the group I was with has easily generated more than a billion dollars in sales.
But the lesson that jumped out to me the most came from one of the mastermind founders, Justin Goff.
He did a talk together with the other mastermind founder, Stefan Georgi.
The Talk Was Titled “Six Ways To Make More Money & Have More Freedom In 2021”…
And number five will shock you! 🤣
(Sorry, copywriter humor lol.)
For real though, the fifth point from the talk was probably my biggest “ah-ha” moment from the event.
It was about “Protecting Your Magic Time.”
See, most people have 2-3 hours during the day where they are the most productive.
That is your “Magic Time.” (I think Justin got that phrase from Craig Ballantyne.)
But you only get one block of Magic Time per day.
So if you waste it, it’s gone forever.
Which is why it’s so important to protect your Magic Time.
Now to be honest, I had heard about this idea before…
Since it’s effectively the same as managing your energy — instead of just your time. Which I talked about on my episode of The Copywriter Club podcast. (That part starts at 0:15:35).
And before the event, I was already pretty good about protecting my Magic Time. Since I block out literally everything I do in my calendar.
But Justin Made Me Realize I Could Still Be Better At Protecting My Magic Time
Because right now I still have to “remember” to protect my magic time.
Meaning if a client asks for a meeting or I need to schedule a doctor’s appointment…
I don’t have any cues that force me to schedule it for the afternoon. (Which would protect my Magic Time in the morning.)
So I’m going to see if I can update my calendar to somehow make it “harder” for me to reschedule my Magic Time blocks.
Either by changing the color for those appointments. Or maybe even creating them with a different user account. And then setting the permissions so that I can’t change those Magic Time blocks with my normal work account.
That way, if I try to move them, I will first have to log out of my main work account and into my Magic Time scheduler account.
On Top Of That, I Also Realized I Need To “Value” My Magic Time More
Here’s what I mean by that…
Last week, I had to schedule a doctor’s appointment. And this doctor has two offices.
One is just a few blocks away from my apartment. Easily within walking distance.
The other office is on the other side of town. And I’d need to take an Uber there.
Which means going to the nearby office will probably save me at least an hour round trip…
But when I called to make my appointment, they only had morning appointments for the nearby office. Plus they only see patients there once a month.
Now I realized booking a morning appointment would erase my Magic Time for that day…
But when I thought about how I would “waste” an extra hour of my day going to the office across town, I decided to take the morning appointment at the nearby office anyway.
Since it would “save me an hour” overall.
Yet after Justin’s presentation, I realize that was a big mistake.
Because In Reality, An Hour Of Magic Time Is Worth At Least Twice As Much As An Hour In The Afternoon — When I’m Least Productive
Which is what I mean by saying I need to “value” my Magic Time more.
Because I should have taken the afternoon appointment at the office across town.
Even though it would take an extra hour round trip!
Because compared to my Magic Time, that extra hour in the afternoon is much less valuable.
And I shouldn’t worry about “wasting” it in order to protect my Magic Time.
Since I’ll get way more done in my few hours of Magic Time that morning, than I would if I lost my Magic Time — but then had an extra hour in the afternoon.
Which is why I’m going to call my doctor back this week to reschedule that appointment.
